This Privacy Policy describes how Dark Cell (“we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, stores, and shares information when you use the Dark Cell online game and website at https://www.playdarkcell.com (the “Service”).
By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.
1. Information we collect
Account information. When you sign up, we collect your email address and a password you choose. Passwords are handled by our authentication provider and are stored in hashed form—we do not store your plain-text password on our game servers.
Game and profile data. To run the game, we store data tied to your account, including:
- Display name and avatar selection
- Character progress (position, inventory, skills, gear, achievements, scores, and related game state)
- Town and world progress where you participate
- Notification preferences (for example, chat mentions or item-found alerts)
Social and community content. If you use in-game chat, forums, friends, suggestions, or similar features, we store the content you submit (such as messages and posts) along with your display name and account identifier. Chat messages are retained for a limited period (town chat for approximately two days; global chat for approximately seven days) before being deleted automatically.
Device and browser data. We and our hosting providers may automatically receive technical information when you use the Service, such as IP address, browser type, device type, and timestamps of requests. We use this information to operate, secure, and troubleshoot the Service.
Local storage on your device. The Service stores some preferences in your browser’s
localStorage or sessionStorage, including login session tokens (when you choose
to stay logged in), display name, avatar choice, and UI settings. You can clear this data through your
browser settings or by deleting your account.
Browser notifications. If you opt in, we use your browser’s notification permission to send alerts about in-game events. We do not receive your notification content from third parties; delivery is handled by your browser and operating system.
Contact form. If you use our public contact page, we collect the name, email address, topic, and message you submit so we can respond. Submissions may be stored in our database and/or forwarded to our email inbox.
2. How we use information
We use the information we collect to:
- Create and manage your account and authenticate you
- Save and restore your game progress across sessions
- Enable multiplayer, chat, forums, and other community features
- Send account-related emails (such as password reset links) through our authentication provider
- Generate optional narrative content (for example, death summaries or daily reports) using automated tools
- Enforce game rules, prevent abuse, and maintain security
- Improve and operate the Service
3. How we share information
We share information only as described below:
- Other players. Your display name, avatar, and in-game actions may be visible to other players in your town or in shared features (chat, forums, rankings, and similar).
- Service providers. We use trusted third parties to host and operate the Service. They process data on our behalf under contractual obligations to protect it. These include:
- Supabase — account authentication and database hosting (Supabase Privacy Policy)
- Render — application hosting (Render Privacy Policy)
- OpenAI — optional AI-generated narrative text; game-related context may be sent to generate summaries, with identifiers and common personal details redacted where possible (OpenAI Privacy Policy)
- Google Fonts — typography loaded from Google’s servers when you visit the site (Google Privacy Policy)
- Legal requirements. We may disclose information if required by law, regulation, legal process, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of users and the Service.
- Business transfers. If we are involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to this Privacy Policy.
4. Data retention
We keep account and game progress data for as long as your account is active. Chat messages are deleted on a rolling schedule as described above. When you delete your account, we permanently remove your login credentials and delete or anonymize personal data associated with your account, including game progress, gear, skills, friends, forum activity, and preferences, subject to limited retention where required by law or needed for legitimate security and fraud-prevention purposes.
Content you posted in shared town or world spaces may remain visible to other players in anonymized or historical form where it is tied to ongoing game worlds rather than your personal account.
5. Your choices and rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you
- Correct inaccurate information
- Delete your account and associated data
- Object to or restrict certain processing
- Withdraw consent where processing is based on consent (such as browser notifications)
- Receive a copy of your data in a portable format
You can delete your account at any time from in-game account settings. Account deletion requires confirming your password and permanently removes your login and personal game data as described in Section 4.
To exercise other privacy rights, contact us using the details in Section 10. We may need to verify your identity before responding.
6. Security
We use industry-standard measures to protect your information, including encrypted connections (HTTPS), authenticated access to game servers, and row-level access controls on the database. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
7. International transfers
The Service is operated from and may use infrastructure located in the United States and other countries. If you access the Service from outside those regions, your information may be transferred to, stored in, and processed in countries that may have different data-protection laws than your own.
8. Children’s privacy
The Service is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your jurisdiction), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will take steps to delete it.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the effective date at the top of this page. Material changes may also be announced in the game or on the website. Your continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
